Illegal Car Scrapping: Stay on the Right Side of the Law!

Illegal car scrapping can leave you facing fines, unexpected costs and continued responsibility for a vehicle you no longer own. Fortunately, it's not difficult to scrap your car legally: just make sure you use an authorised treatment facility and notify the DVLA.

Scrapped cars

If you've decided to scrap your knackered old car, bear in mind that you can't hand it over to just anyone. UK law requires end-of-life vehicles to be taken to an authorised treatment facility (ATF).

Choosing a legitimate vehicle recycler keeps you on the right side of the law while also ensuring that your car will be handled in a responsible, environmentally-conscious way.

Keep reading to learn how to avoid illegal car scrapping and dispose of your unwanted vehicle correctly.

Why do I have to use an ATF?

Only an authorised treatment facility (ATF) are licensed to dismantle, depollute and recycle end-of-life vehicles. Cars contain a number of potentially dangerous materials, and if these are not removed correctly, they can cause serious damage to the environment.

An ATF will be able to:

  • Remove petrol, oil and other hazardous fluids safely
  • Recover reusable vehicle components
  • Separate recyclables from other materials
  • Dispose of hazardous waste responsibly
  • Record everything correctly

It's illegal to scrap your vehicle anywhere other than at an ATF. If you live in England, you can use the UK government's authorised treatment facility finder to check whether your local scrap yard is approved. For Wales, check the Natural Resources Wales register.

How to scrap your car legally

To scrap your car without breaking the law, follow these steps:

1) Find an authorised treatment facility.

Before accepting a scrap car quote or arranging collection, make sure your vehicle will be processed by an authorised treatment facility (ATF).

If you're in South Wales, A&L Vehicle Recycling is a local ATF that's registered with Natural Resources Wales (permit number: AP3095FU). We will give you money for your unwanted car and collect it from your address free of charge.

2) Prepare for collection.

Once you have accepted a quote from a legitimate scrap car dealer, the next step is to arrange a convenient collection time and get all your documents in order.

Speak to your chosen ATF to find out what they will need from you. If you still have your V5C log book, you may need to hand this over, but don't worry if you've lost your V5C – you should still be able to scrap you car as long as you have photographic ID and can prove that you own the vehicle in question.

3) Accept payment through a legal method.

It is illegal to receive cash for a vehicle that is being scrapped in England or Wales. Scrap car payments must be made by bank transfer or cheque.

Be very cautious if somebody offers cash for your old car. This is a big warning sign that illegal car scrapping may be going on.

4) Notify the DVLA.

This part is very important: you must notify the DVLA that your vehicle has been scrapped. As stated in the UK government's scrapped and written-off vehicle guidance, you can be fined £1,000 if you fail to tell the DVLA.

You can use the link below to notify the DVLA online.

5) Keep your certificate of destruction.

When you scrap your vehicle, the ATF should issue a certificate of destruction within 7 days. This document serves as proof that you handed over the vehicle for scrap.

Keep this certificate and your DVLA confirmation safe. Without the correct records, you could remain liable for vehicle tax or penalties connected to the vehicle.

Illegal car scrapping: red flags

An attractive offer is not worth the risk if there's a good chance the person who's interested in buying your vehicle is operating illegally. Look out for these warning signs:

  • The dealer can't or won't confirm which ATF will receive the vehicle
  • The dealer wants to pay you in cash
  • The dealer tells you that notifying the DVLA is unnecessary
  • You're given no record of the transaction

If something doesn't seem right, do not hand over your car keys or documents. Check the operator's credentials or choose a recognised local ATF instead.
