Car with foreign number plate

Yes, it’s possible to scrap an imported car in the UK, as long as it has fully completed the import process and has been officially registered and taxed in the UK. [more]

Can I scrap a temporary import?

If you have been driving your car in the UK for less than six months and it’s still registered in another country, then your car is classed as a temporary import.

If you decide you want to scrap that car in the UK, you’ll need to find out what the specific regulations are in the country where it’s registered.

If you are able to legally scrap your car in the UK, be sure to inform the registered country once your vehicle has been destroyed. To do this you’ll need to provide a Certificate of Destruction, which should be given to you by the scrap car dealer. This document officially proves that your vehicle has been scrapped.

If you do no not let the relevant motoring governing body know when you’ve scrapped your car, you could face several fines.

How to scrap a car in the UK

To dispose of your vehicle safely and legally in the UK, you’ll need to scrap it at an authorised treatment facility (ATF) – a title given to registered scrap yards and breaker's yards.

ATFs are permitted to carry out the dismantling and disposal of electronic waste in line with specific safety rules and regulations.

Here at A&L Vehicle Recycling, we are committed to responsible recycling. When you choose us, you can rest assured that your materials are being disposed of in a sustainable and responsible way.

Scrapping your old vehicle is a great way to safely dispose of it and earn some extra money in the process!

There are several factors that affect the price of a scrap car, most of which are out of your control. Still, there are a few things you can do to potentially bump up the price.

Here are a few handy tips to help you get the most for your scrap car… [more]

Scrap it as soon as possible

Typically, the longer you hold onto your car, the more it will have depreciated in value by the time you scrap it for cash.

All cars depreciate in value, and some a lot faster than others, so it’s a good idea to get a quote from a dealer as soon as you decide to scrap it.

Check current scrap metal prices

There are several factors that influence scrap metal prices, including:

  • Supply and demand
  • Metal type and quality
  • Global economic trends
  • Transportation and processing costs
  • Environmental regulations

The price of scrap metal is known to fluctuate often and, as a result, so do the prices offered by scrap dealers. Keep an eye on the most recent scrap metal prices and try to get a scrap car quote when prices are up.

Keep all car parts intact

Scrap dealers tend to pay more for cars that are complete, so it’s best to refrain from removing certain parts to be sold separately. Plus, it’s much easier to sell your car in its entirety than to go from dealer to dealer selling separate parts.

The most valuable parts of a car are:

  • Doors, window and mirrors
  • Catalytic converters
  • Car bumpers
  • Seats
  • Engines

Use up all your fuel

If your car is driveable, continue using it until you’ve used up all of the remaining fuel – you paid for it, so there’s no point letting it go to waste!

Apply for a road tax refund

An easy place to get some extra money back is by checking if you’re eligible for a road tax refund.

If you are owed a refund, you should receive your money in the form of a cheque. This can take up to 8 weeks after informing the DVLA to arrive.

Get your car collected

Arranging for your car to be collected by the dealer is not only easier but it saves you time and money on petrol.

Here at A&L Vehicle Recycling, we offer free and fast scrap car collection to make selling your car for scrap easier than ever!

how are scrap metal prices determined

how are scrap metal prices determined

Scrap metal recycling plays a crucial role in mitigating pollution, conserving resources, minimising landfill waste, and safeguarding habitats from the impacts of mining. By recycling metals, we can actively preserve natural resources, diminish greenhouse gas emissions, and minimise energy consumption compared to the extraction and processing of virgin ore.

Have you ever wondered "how are scrap metal prices determined?" Understanding this process can provide valuable insight into the scrap metal market and help individuals and businesses alike make informed decisions. Let’s take a closer look at how scrap metal prices are determined.

Factors that influence scrap metal prices

1) Supply and demand

Like any other commodity, scrap metal prices are heavily influenced by the basic principles of supply and demand. When demand for metal is high, prices tend to rise, and vice versa. Factors such as economic growth, industrial production, and construction activities contribute to fluctuations in demand.

2) Metal type and quality

Not all metals are created equal. The type and quality of metal significantly impacts its market value. Precious metals like gold and platinum command higher prices due to their scarcity and unique properties. Similarly, metals with high purity levels fetch better prices compared to those with impurities.

3) Global economic trends

Scrap metal prices are also influenced by global economic trends and geopolitical factors. Events like trade tariffs, currency fluctuations, and internal conflicts can disrupt supply chains and affect metal prices worldwide.

4) Transportation and processing costs

The costs associated with transporting and processing scrap metal play a significant role in determining its final price. Factors such as distance to recycling facilities, fuel prices, and labour costs impact the overall cost, which ultimately reflects in the selling price.

5) Environmental regulations

Strict environmental regulations can influence scrap metal prices by imposing additional compliance costs on recycling facilities. Companies that adhere to eco-friendly practices may incur higher expenses, which can be reflected in the prices they offer for scrap metal.
